Road data collection, whether for asset registers, defect identification, or condition monitoring, is often carried out through visual assessments. While this method is common, it can be subjective and lead to inaccurate data quality. To enhance road data collection, new tools and approaches need thorough validation to determine their suitability for Local Government use. This project helps practitioners select the best solutions to improve data quality. With more accurate data, Local Governments can make better decisions, improve planning, and justify their spending effectively.

Crumb Rubber Modified Bitumen (CRMB) incorporates recycled tyre rubber into bitumen, delivering enhanced performance and sustainability benefits. CRMB has been successfully used in Australian road networks and globally, offering improved durability and resistance to cracking.
This project provides a catalogue of pavement profiles for asphalt and sprayed seal applications for a range of traffic volumes and subgrade CBR values. Local Governments practitioners will be able to use these to select profiles for design and construction, check designs provided by external parties and reference when investigating road failures.
LG TRRIP developed an asset management practitioners’ guideline for unsealed roads from a whole of life cost basis. It provides local government practitioners with guidance regarding when an unsealed road (or specific section of road) should be sealed due to several factors, including increased traffic.
Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) is a sustainable and cost-effective material that can be incorporated into asphalt mixes for local roads. RAP has been widely researched and successfully implemented by road authorities across Australia and internationally. Its use reduces reliance on virgin aggregates and bitumen, lowering environmental impact and project costs.
Even though crumbed rubber modified bitumen (CRMB) has been identified for use in sprayed seals for local roads. Local Governments in WA would benefit from guidance on design, specification and construction, targeted for applications in WA in order to build confidence in this application.
There is an increasing focus on the use of recycled materials for road building. The IPWEA/WALGA Specification for the supply of recycled road base was published in 2016 and some Local Governments have been using this material on a variety of projects. There is still some reluctance to specify crushed recycled concrete (CRC) for road basecourse, due to the perceived risk of reflective cracking and uncertainty regarding design and construction practices.
